Fished Del Rey Beach in Oregon for surf perch. First time fishing in the surf for this species, based upon a lot of people telling me it was fun.

A nice day on the the beach, but a thoroughly sour experience for fishing. Two of us fished the incoming tide for 3 hours, and got one bite between us in that whole time. Used Berkeley Gulp sandworms, bloodworms, and shrimp bait. Used 2 ounces of weight in order to chuck it out there far enough to get into the dropoffs in the surf.

Not particularly pleased, and it is debatable whether I want to try surf fishing again.

Did you move much? You have to keep walking and fishing to find them. Not all surf has the bottom structure they like. If you don't hook any in 15 minutes move 50 yards.

Yup, we moved around a lot once a spot failed to produce.

I suggest trying again later in the year, May or later, when it warms up a bit. The perch will begin spawning by June and usually things get really good when they do.
