This is a two day report for Thursday and Friday (4th and 5th of Aug.). Guitarfish and I grabbed a campsite for a couple days chasing sockeye around the lake.
Thursday the launch was not too bad since there were only a few boats in front of us, we motored to the far end of the lake and got the rods down. We were seeing fish caught all around us but we could not seem to get any action. It was tough steering and keeping the boat on track in all the wind, I found the easiest was to go with the wind and put the motor in reverse to slow us down. Finally we start getting some action, but we loose the first fish at the net. Slowly we are putting fish in the boat (a few user errors lost a couple more fish), but it was a grind with the weather. With only 4 fish about noon we started loosing hopes for limits, with many of the other boats already cleared out. We managed to net three more fish before the full strength of the wind a three foot+ waves blew us off the water at 2:30. 42' was the depth Thursday. Guitarfish has the sweet vacu-sealer that plugs into the trolling battery so we got all the fish filleted and sealed.
Leaving the boat on the bank was a great decision as by 4:30 AM Friday the line to launch was way down the road, but we jumped in the boat and were fishing by 5:20. Glassy smooth and calm waters today, which really showed the rigs that were getting all the action (shorter leaders and/or bigger dodger). Thursday seemed about equal since there was so much wave action.
None of the smile blades or hootchie rigs got any love, just the custom bare three hook setup. Started fast and furious with three in the boat right off the bat and 4 by 9, then long droughts with empty screens. We had 7 in the boat when we realized we need to check out of camp so we motored down, packed up and came back out to finish off the limits. Back on the water we started looking for the schools, but screens were empty, but that did not matter as the rod started bouncing and the final fish was in the boat (then the FF lit up with fish everywhere). Got the fish filleted, vacu-sealed and back home we went with a cooler full of slabs. Started at 55', then got the last three 75-80'.
