Decided to go up to Fish Lake this weekend to take advantage of the nice weather and some pre-algae bloom fishing.

Got on the water around 9:30. Hardly any wind, which was a definite plus. Put my pontoon boat in on the north shore, off of F.S. Road 6202. This shore has a defined weedbed and shallows extending out approximately 20 yards before dropping steadily off. Noticed a nice little hatch of dark brown caddis flies fluttering around the shore. Mosquitoes were active also.

Fished primarily with intermediate sinking line, 10 foot tippet (5x). Tried chironimids, emergers, wooly buggers, and caddis larva. Barbless. Had most success on chironimids. Mostly 10-12 inch rainbows. All spunky and in good condition.

Numerous rises and some big splashes around the reeds. Assuming these were big boys going after some pre-emerging caddis flies. Hooked two large ones but lost them (poor hook sets on my part).

Wind began to pick up slowly around noon, off and on, until I got off the water around three. Starting to blow then.

All in all a nice day to tool around the shore. Of course, lots of boat
traffic but not enough to bother me.

I recommend flyfishing close to shore off the weed beds, paralleling the drop off. The bigger fish appeared to be hanging our where the food is.

A couple more days of warmer weather and I'd expect the hatches, and the fishing to pick up.
