Getting there was a problem as we had to drive off road around a fallen tree and a few deep snow drifts. But all was forgotten once fishing commenced. I did well last year catching some sizable German Browns fishing on the bottom with a slow retrieve, using a Black Wooly Bugger. This trip was a little different. Me and a buddy put our float tubes in at the boat ramp and started fishing the South end of the lake. After about 15 minutes I picked up a small Eastern Brook, which don’t seem to get much size on them in this lake. Another 15 minutes passed and my buddy picked up a nice 14” rainbow fishing deep. I headed in to fish the shoreline and picked up more small Brookies, then a nice 14” Rainbow, a few more Brooks then a 15” Brown. By this time I have tried several fly patters with the Black Wooly Bugger being the best, but unlike last year I was picking them up in the shallower water with a pretty fast retrieve. After we made it to the inlet in the South East corner of the la!
ke, my friend who was fishing with a spinning rod had only picked up that one rainbow so far. I think I had around 11 by this time. Another tuber came along who was fishing with a dry fly and hadn’t picked up a fish yet. I suggested that he try a sinking line and a Bugger. He tied on a Black Bugger with a gold bead head and some crystal flash. Dang I wish I had a couple. He pulled out 4 fish in a row from the inlet which where all nice size rainbows, while I was going through a dry spell. I ended up picking a few fish and when while the other guy continued to pick up some nice fish included a 20” Rainbow. We fished along the Eastern edge of the lake heading to the back end, my friend finally caught another fish. At the back end of the lake fishing was good in the shallower depths. I was fishing in about 4-6 feet of water and picked up one of those large 20” Rainbows. They where obviously planned at some point in the lake with beat up fins and almost no dorsal, but they had good color and put up a great fight. I also picked up a nice 16" cutt.
