Alkali is a great and seldom fished lake...in the last year or so it has taken off. The dept. of fish and wildlife put some steril walleye in there a couple years ago to thin out the perch population, but the walleyes are all gone now. Also i was talking to one of my friends at the hatchery and he said they will no longer stock it with trout because it is too shallow and the trout will all die if there is a significant ice build up for an extended time period. So if you think your gonna land a lunker trout in there now you are sadly mistaken. There are a few nice largemouth bass that i caught in there though and a huge amount of perch and bluegill. i caught well over 100 perch and 10 blue gill in 2-3hrs the other day. Alkali was poisened in 1999 to make room for trout by the DFW and of course we had a cold long winter and tehy all died a few years later. Have fun fishing for the spiney rays in there though tehy love it there.

first cast, 6 feet out off of spring canyon, 4lb 20" WILD rainbow. That's right, WILD. This fish fought hard and was caught off of a spawn bag. Felt real good listening to the ooohs and awwwws. Definitley would fish this again. Kept getting bites on the spawn bags.

The weather was great. Blue sky all day, the ice was still 8-10 inches,
and 3 fish made the trip above the ice for me. The largest being 15"
and just under 2lbs. My other two fish were 14" and over a pound a piece.
A white 1/16 ounce crappie jig with a constant, light action of jigging
did the trick. The action on Alkali isn't fast, maybe a bite an hour on
average but it is worth fishing.

There is ice fishing to be done in the Basin. Went to Alkali on the
last day of 2000 with some luck. The whole lake is iced over and has
been for quite some time. The ice was 8-10 inches right off the
highway where I tried it. Walked out about 40 yards and drilled some
holes. I jigged a swedish pimple for awhile with no takers then
switched to just a white 1/16 ounce crappie jig, it wasn't long before
the first bite. Landed a nice 14" rainbow in about the 1lb range. Had
one more fish on for a few seconds about 20 minutes later, looked to
be about the same size. Then the weather got worse with snow and rain
and the fish seemed to quit biting and so did I.
Going to try again on 1/6/00. The weather is going to be in the upper
30's here for awhile so be sure to check the ice thickness before going
out too far. I like at least 4 inches to be safe.
Good luck,
Jim
