I to the launch at around 2:30. Since the west side of the lake has been infested with weeds, I planned on just fishing the east side of the lake. After launching, I motored over to the point on the east side and fished the docks around there. I didn’t have much luck, so I decided to continue working my way down the docks. I came to a dock that had weed beds lining both sides. I made a cast right next to the swim ladder and was able to hook into a nice 1.25 pound bass. This catch was within my first 30 minutes of fishing, so I had a lot of hope for the rest of the day. I continued down the east side, but wasn’t able to get anything for another 30 minutes or so. I then came across a floating dock noticed the dock was raised on one side, leaving a small gap between the water and the dock. I made a perfect cast into the crevice and sure enough I was able to land another smallmouth. This one weighed in at around one pound. With two fish within an hour time, I was feeling optimistic and continued working the east side docks. Unfortunately, the bite went cold after that. I tried lots of different spots, but wasn't able to catch anything else. I finally headed in at around 5:00, disappointed that after the early flurry of excitement, I wasn’t able to land any more fish.

You don't like fishing weeds this time of year??? Your first fish proved that the Bass still can be around the weeds in Nov., and Dec., and Jan., and Feb. ALL winter long. Keep trying the grass lines.

That's a good point! I enjoy fishing grass lines and grass beds, but have a tough time fishing weeds. I seem to get snagged a lot and I lose a lot of gear fishing weeds. I've tried Texas imposing my soft plastics, but it still seems to get caught. Any tips?

Texas rigged worms, pointy nosed jigs from 1/4 to 1 oz in weight. Texas rigged carolina rigs, and dropshot worms and grubs, straight tail grubs will come thru the weeds easy enough. Put on some smelly stuff to lube the worms to slide thru the weeds much better. Crankbaits, yes crankbaits in winter, over the weeds, and even down slightly into the tops of the weeds. Fish everything slow, very slow, in winter.

Outside weedlines can be great this time of year as bass begin to transition to their deep winter haunts. Assuming the water temp is still in the 50's a jerkbait is a good option in clear water. along with everything else AMX mentioned. Sure you will pick up a few weeds here and there but thats where the bass are waiting to ambush bait. Often times the strike will come when you rip the bait out of the weeds.

Well, Texposing a hook only slightly hides the point. The pressure of weeds along the worm will bend the plastic down and the hook point will be exposed. I do a total Texas rig, bury the point fully. I haven't lost a worm/rig in the weeds in years. Now dropshotting the Sniper Snub and Bolt in the weeds regardless of how you rig the hook in the worm and you'll loose lots of worms because the Sniper worms are so soft, but they catch me lots of fish. Outside weed line early this month caught me a 3.99 Smallie on the Sniper Snub, and it was slightly back in the weeds and came thru fine, just drag it slow, let it work it's way around any weed that may want to get hooked.
