Fished lake sammamish for just a couple hours last evening until dark. Most people who go fish around the weather buoy by the boat launch, but I fished the middle of the lake close to the Bellevue (west) side of the lake. Fished in 60-75 feet of water down about 20-35 feet. Fished with one small down rigger and one deep six diver down 22 pulls. ( about 33 feet). Fished one green/black wedding ring with a ford fender and one gold/pink wedding ring with a 4/0 dick nite dodger. Both tipped with night crawler. Hoping to get into a nice cutthroat, we trolled just fast enough to make the dodger and fender work. Within about 3 minutes of having my gear down, a fish was nibbling away. Missed that bite. Went on for about 40 minutes and was having no action so I pulled up, and to my surprise I feel a fast yank! So I handed the pole off to my nine year old neighbor who was curious about fishing and wanted to tag along. He is by this point having he time of his life reeling in a beautiful fish. Hoping it is a trout I reach in and pull out a huge Kokanee. Darn it! But still a good fight and my little buddy loved it. He is jumping out of his chair and yelling with excitement. I rebait and send the line back down for some more. I check my down rigger line pop the clip and fish on! My turn now. I reel in and another Kokanee little smaller. But I look over and and my diver line is going nuts! I pop it out of the pole holder, and pass it onto my little buddy and line is stripping out of the pole holder, and we finally land the monster. It's yet another Kokanee but this one is special. It's s true football. I had to put a measure on him before throwing him in. Near 20 inches and over an inch thick. Monster. And so forth the evening. Not bad for about 2 hours. Got into 7 fish in all. Transformed a young kid into a fisherman for life.

No trout, so again for another day but still a great day to break in my new old boat.

Tight lines and good fishin!

The trick to keeping the kokanee off your gear in Sammamish is to troll at a quicker pace, at least 1.7mph and to lay off using bait, especially anything shrimp/krill scented. I've picked up kokes over 20" in Sammamish while trolling pop gear/worm and flasher/hoochie setups. Now I stick to spoons and plugs when I hit the lake. They are so darn fragile after being hooked, many die after being released. It's even worse in the summer when they are stressed due to poor oxygen levels and high water temps.
