Danny (husband) and I woke up early on Sunday and zipped down to the westport jetty. We both had a day off together which doesnt happen often. We brought along our usual arsenal of jigs, plus some banjo minnows given to us by salmonbarry. We arrived to a full parking lot, (forgot about the clam digs.) Found a spot and we were fishing right around low slack. Jetty was full of fishermen and almost all of them fishing the bay side. About 20 minutes go by and Danny hooks the first ling on a 2 oz jighead with a purple grub. We get it netted and its a really decent sized ling for the jetty, about 32inches.We thought this is a great start! Then we go at least a couple hours without a bite. Danny moves to bay side and starts to fish a buzz bomb and quickly hooks 4 sea bass. All small, and only one worth keeping. Then we decided to slowly make our way back in. Right around 4:30 I hook a big ling on a 2 oz jig head with a silver and black sluggo. It eventually broke me off, as I couldnt get control of it. I tie on a good ol banjo minnow and a few cast later hook another ling. Luckily I get it in and its about 26in. Danny hooks a ling and after a few head shakes it gets off. I get a really decent greenling that was probably about 5lbs. He hooks 4 greenling and then the bite stops again. We called it a day and walked back in. It wasnt hot but it wasnt slow. Everyone we talked to said they only hooked under sized lings, and didnt see any good sized seabass either. Still some decent sized lings out there. Best part of the day was a massive gray whale and her baby swam right up to me on the rocks and stuck their gigantic heads out of the water, and looked at me. I felt very lucky! They then preceded to show put on quite a show chasing the anchovies.

Great report! Glad you guys could get a day off and fish together with some success too! Those banjo minnows looked so cool when we were playing around with them in Elliot bay I had a feeling they couldn't resist them out there on the jetty!.. Congrats and enjoy the great meals to come soon!

and REALLY cool about those whales!! Reminds me of the days fishing off the rocks down the Big Sur coast and having those big boys just come within feet of us so that we would get misted by their blow hole blasts!

Awesome report on the fishing and the whale! What a bonus, something to remember for years looking into a whale's eye. I saw a pod of whales near the beach a few weeks back, sounds like you had a much closer view than I, CONGRATS!
