Some people celebrate the unofficial start of summer with a Memorial Day barbecue, my kids say it starts with school letting out, but for me summer officially begins with my annual trip to Westport for Chinook. The summer salmon season actually opened Saturday, June 8th, but I was sidelined with my oldest son’s baseball championship, a well-deserved excuse to miss the opener. My fishing partner, G...

Looks like we are going to get a brief pause in the hot weather we’ve had lately, heading into next week. I enjoyed a great day of fishing for smallmouth bass on Banks Lake on a hot day last week. Smallmouth bass fishing is very good on many lakes in the region, and I had a particularly good time, as my daughter Whitney came over to join me on Fathers Day Weekend. One of my daughter’s favor...

This past weekend my brother Brett made the trek up here from Oregon to work a few lakes that we hadn’t visited in quite some time. As most of you know we try and work different lakes give you our experience on them and what worked for us. I will then post the photos on my Uncle Wes Facebook page for all to view. This year I have worked lakes in Mason, Thurston, and Lewis County. Strictly by coinc...

Having put my quest for walleye on Moses Lake behind me, I checked out the smallmouth bass fishing on a couple of the more popular waters here in Central Washington. I made a trip to Lake Chelan to shoot a Fishing TV Show for my web site, and the next day hit Banks Lake. I found smallmouth in good numbers in both lakes, and had a blast catching them. I had planned the trip to Chelan a coupl...

The Umpqua River’s redtailed surfperch run continues to dominate our area’s fishing opportunities. The fishing is gradually improving, and while some days are better than others, the fishing is definitely getting better. Last Friday was the best fishing day yet for the upriver perch and a number of boat limits were reported taken by 8 am. Sand shrimp continues to be the most popular bait, but othe...

This past Sunday I had the opportunity to introduce my style of trout angling to my good friend Kevin Bye. Kevin is a hard core Tiger Musky angler in fact he is well known within the Musky community, he has done several interviews on the subject and also gives a very fine seminar. Kevin is an EMT with the Seattle Fire Department and on his days off you will more than likely find him on one of the ...

The Umpqua River redtailed surfperch run (pinkfins) has been more productive recently with a number of bosts catching 30 or more fish and one boat with five anglers catching 65 last Sunday. However, there are lots of boats enjoying little or minimal perch fishing success. Of course I have little sympathy for the guy who called me last Saturday at 6;30, while anchored above Winchester Bay, wonder...

I had a great week, enjoying a very good day of walleye fishing at Moses Lake after a couple of disappointing attempts. I was part of a very successful Kids Fishing Day at the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery and ended the week with the opportunity to talk to many fellow anglers during the Bob Feil Boat Show at Hooked on Toys over the past weekend. If you have been following my broadcast r...

As everyone knows I conduct most of my business matters in my boat on a lake somewhere, this week was no different. I am heavily involved in lining up speakers, guides and venders for an upcoming event at JBLM which will be held on the 22nd of June starting at 10am. This has become quite a challenge on such short notice but thankfully I have all the speakers and about half of the booths filled. I ...

I wanted to start this column out about long range weather forecasts that you get about 7-days in advance. They are rarely correct and I never take them seriously, if I had done so over this past holiday weekend I would have been sadly disappointed. Don’t get me wrong I am quite happy with the way the weather turned out. If the forecasters had been correct the lakes, parking areas, and ramps would...

On Saturday there will be a free fishing event at Tugman Park on Eel Lake. On Sunday, there will be a free fishing event on Lake Marie. These events are wonderful places to introduce youngsters to fishing. The youngsters get a free hotdog and pop for simply registering and can get the same for picking up some litter. In the meantime, there are hourly prize drawings, fishing tackle to use and fis...

The Memorial Weekend saw thousands of people visiting our area. The weather was mild and families were able to enjoy a terrific three day weekend over here. I made a trip to Moses Lake to try to do better than the dismal success I had last time I fished for walleye here. I did, too, but just barely. I was actually encouraged by a weather forecast that called for overcast skies and wind; wh...
